The prostate gland is a small, walnut-shaped gland in males, located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It surrounds part of the urethra, the tube that carries urine and semen out of the body. The primary function of the prostate is to produce a fluid that nourishes and protects sperm. This fluid is a key component of semen and helps sperm move more efficiently during ejaculation.

The prostate begins to grow during puberty and continues to grow with age. In some men, this growth can lead to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which may cause urinary problems such as difficulty urinating or frequent urges to urinate. The prostate can also be affected by inflammation (prostatitis) or cancer, particularly in older men. Regular check-ups and screenings, especially after age 50, are important for early detection of prostate issues and maintaining overall male reproductive health.
